High-end smoking lounges making San Francisco a haven for pot enthusiasts

High-end smoking lounges making San Francisco a haven for pot enthusiasts

The legalization of medical as well as recreational marijuana in California has led to the opening of several high-end dispensaries with separate smoking lounges in San Francisco. In fact, experts say the City by the Bay has become the weed capital of the United States with pot enthusiasts flocking to its many Amsterdam-style smoking lounges for a puff. Currently, California is the only state in the country that permits smoking weed at dispensaries.

Barbary Coast, one of the high-end dispensaries in San Francisco, acquired its license to operate smoking lounges just a few days after California’s recreational marijuana market opened on Jan. 1, 2018. “The city is built for tourists. We put a lot of work into giving them a San Francisco experience,” said Jesse Henry, general manager of Barbary Coast. Satisfied patrons swear by the ambience and service of this popular marijuana smoking lounge. “There’s nothing like this in Jersey,” said an Atlantic City resident who enjoyed getting high with his cousins in San Francisco.

Notably, San Francisco is the only city in California to authorize the sale and use of marijuana in retail outlets on the lines of the coffee shops in Amsterdam. However, city’s marijuana “czar” Nicole Elliot said that further licenses will be issued once San Francisco health officials finalize rules to protect dispensary staff from secondhand smoke and weed odor leaking into the neighborhood. While Oakland already has a lounge, and West Hollywood plans to issue up to eight licenses for lounges. But other bigger cities like Los Angeles and Sacramento are still not sure if they want to go ahead with such an initiative.

Marijuana is harmful

Despite the widespread legalization of cannabis taking place all over the nation, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) due to the absence of any recognized therapeutic value, and the heightened risk of abuse. Marijuana is a highly addictive drug, which can cause cognitive and respiratory disorders, mental health issues, and other life-threatening consequences.

Research suggests that the neurotoxin — delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — present in marijuana is the main cause of addiction. Frequent use leaves users completely dependent on the drug. Estimates of the number of people addicted to weed are phenomenal. According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 24 million Americans aged 12 or older in that year were current users of cannabis. Although, it may seem like a daunting task, the need of the hour is to combat addiction by creating awareness about dangers of marijuana use and expanding access to treatment. Professional treatment at a reputed rehab center can go a long way in leading a life free from marijuana addiction.
